Copy Righting and Publishing

One of my biggest thrills besides my family, Christianity, and mathematics, is writing/editing.

I have written and edited speeches. I also write poetry and stories. I know this may be a far fetched dream, but I would love to become a well-known, successful, and published author.

Have any of you ever had any material copy righted or published?
If so, what were your steps and what company did you go with?

I worked for a publishing company for a while. It was mostly trade association who needed newsletters, magazines, or directories published. Authors would just submit their work, we'd edit it (though not much), and publish it in the book if it seemed relevant. The trick is having an "in" with the publisher so they'll look at your piece rather then the other 10,000 sitting on their desk.

I've only had tips published in a couple magazines. Nothing published book wise or anything.
