Should income determine family size?

Because we re-purpose so much, buy from thrift stores, garden like crazy and preserve so much, we live well within our means. I make a very modest living, and the bf has a great paying job. If we were to get pregnant again right now we could afford it.

I don't think being financially "ready" is ever possible. Kids cost A LOT no matter where you live or what you do. That being said, I am very much against growing families that are already strapped and can't afford the basics. Families that receive any form of assistance should not add to their size until they are plenty comfortable on their feet again.

This is my opinion. What's yours?

I think that you are right in some aspects. Being a family on assistance, we have added to our family. Part of our thing is, my husband finds a job, we get pregnant, and then he loses it. We never go off the assistance. My husbands newest job will help us to get on our feet, but we are so far in the hole, that we would be too old to have kids once we fully get back up on our feet. We have managed to afford the basics thus far. We are on food assistance and medicaid. We have NEVER asked for cash, because I do not want to go back to work. I love being a stay at home mom. That is part of the reason we are in debt.
This is such a personal decision. I knew after Bub I needed to stop and the number one reason was financial. For me personally I needed to feel financially secure in order to be comfortable raising my kids. Do I struggle? Sure. I know I can do it though and being a single parent after divorce makes me glad I stopped at two. Maybe I always thought it was possible to be on my own and that's why it was such a big factor to me.
