Babies, Water, and Solid foods

When we started Avery on solid foods she was only 5 months old. We'd planned on waiting until 6 months, but she was really ready. I didn't give her any water right away because she was still so young. I would just nurse her right before feeding her.

My pediatrician said that once a baby is 6 months old they should get a few sips of water with their solids. It helps digestion and can prevent constipation. It's also good to start training them on cup so they can develop those muscles in their mouth. It doesn't need to be a lot. Just a few sips is enough, don't force it.

We've always just given the option for water - it's in a sippy cup and within reach, but have never forced it on them.

My niece is five months old and just started solids. She was actually crying at the table because she couldn't eat what mommy and daddy were eating. :(
