How do I get my Mother In Law to come back for a visit?

I would love to have my Mother in Law back for a visit but she told my Husband she will never come back to our home. She swears it's not me but, I think it is! I finally defended myself after 17 years of her belittling me and downing my family. So, now I wish I hadn't because it has made things difficult between me and my husband. So, how do I get her to come back for a visit?

Funny you should say this because I asked him to say something or things were going to get ugly!

I have done this and she swears she's not upset with me she just felt out of her element.

Good for you for finally standing up for yourself. Its a hard place to be between a husband and a mother in law. I would set down and have a honest talk with her or write her a letter if she's difficult to talk to. And tell her you two might have your differences but you would like to put them aside for your husband her sons sack because he shouldn't have to chose between his wife and mother. Just tell her agree to disagree and not to talk about certain subjects when together. Talk about something else, the kids, the weather if yas have too lol. Goodluck. :)

Oh my gosh. My only guess is to let her get over herself. Congrats to you for standing up for yourself, beliefs and family! Everyone has that right, and no one has the right to belittle you without consequence. I also agree with Jessica. Try to have a heartfelt, non-belligerent conversation and hopefully it will lead to good things. When the ego is wounded some people run away! You can be the bigger person here, like she said and maybe help resolve it, but she will have to resolve it within herself.

        Cassaundra,
If you've ever seen "Everybody Loves Raymond" me and my Mother-in-Law have the same relationship as Debra and Marie.

Update: She came back for New Years! Found out the problem was, her feelings got hurt by my sister sticking up for me while I was having the baby.
