To circumcise or not to circumcise

I just quickly read an article about why the author and his wife chose not to circumcise but I didn't really find a set answer except this:

"...in parenting as in life, gather data, but ultimately stay grounded and follow our own hearts and intuition."

This is the basis of all our parenting isn't it? Each one of us is going to decide what we think and feel is best for our children and most of us do thorough research in this age of technology.

The author raised a few eyebrow raising tidbits of information that made sense.

We chose to circumcise three of our sons based on the belief it was the right thing to do, my husband is and for religious reasons. Our last son, we missed the opportunity to circumcise him in our doctor's office and did not feel comfortable (my gut screamed NOOOOOO!) putting our newborn under anesthetic in a hospital with an unknown urologist. We didn't even know a urologist! So the timing was not right for our youngest son and he is in tact.

So what do you think of circumcision?

We decided not to circumcise our two boys based on the fact that it is an unnecessary surgery done without anesthesia. I've heard of botched circumcisions but the worst by far was one in which (I guess) the penis was ruined, and the doctor cut it off, making the boy a girl. When the boy was a teen, dad told him the truth. I think he committed suicide later. Granted, this is an extreme case, but an elective surgery is not worth the risk.

We had it done for our son but I never really thought about it. My fiance is the one who answered when they asked if we would like for him to be circumcised. I had planned on doing it but I think he put more thought into it than I did. Everyone in my family has had it done for their children so I never even thought twice about it.

        All three boys are circumsized.
We decided to do it with haiden a month before he was born.
Then with logan we didnt want haiden asking questions about why his brother penis was different.
With vince we figured with both other boys are done lets just do his.

That is one of the reasons we did it--for medical purposes.

My son was circumcised because we thought it would be best. It is also easier to potty-train a circumcised boy as well. We also did it for medical reasons. And, to add to that, my hubby knew someone who wasn't circumcised and something got caught and a piece was ripped...and ew, no, gross.

I work in a nursing home and did not circumcise my son. I did research. The problems from elderly men that can't clean themselves with a foreskin are because our society is not taught how to properly care for a natural penis. Most people that talk about increased risk for infection are misinformed. Medical professionals are taught to care for a circumcised penis because that has been our societal norm for generations. They don't actually know how to care for an intact penis. As an infant and young child, the foreskin is SUPPOSED to be fused to the head of the penis. Retracting this to "prevent adhesions" causes tears and opens the area up for infection. It also causes scar tissue to form and build up each time it is torn. This results in thickening, swelling, and pain. You should never forcefully retract an intact penis. When the foreskin retracts naturally (often as late as puberty), then the foreskin should be retracted and rinsed thoroughly for cleaning.
