Long car rides

What do you do to keep your kids occupied on long car rides? We use the portable dvd player but I don't always think that's a good idea. It just goes to show how spoiled kids are today( including mine lol). I remember when I was little that would've been crazy talk about a tv in the car. So what do you do for your kids and what did your parents do for you? My mom would just talk to us, listen to music and we'd sing a lot, all of us :) or if it was a really long trip we'd take coloring books/books

We play count the cows, you have to count the cows and everytime you come to a horse in a field with the cows you have to start all over again.

Count the cows sounds fun. We'll have to try that one. Thanks ladies

We have always mixed up movies, books on tape, and word games. One of my favorites is the one where we make up a story together, consecutively adding the next "paragraph." My, how strange they get! We look for license plates, flags and letters on signs.

The big basket of toys never seems worth the space. We packed a small backpack per kid and let them pick what goes in after age 4 or so. Running races at rest stops helps, as do some car snacks/food stops. Watch out if your kids read or draw in the car and suddenly come down with headaches or upset stomachs. 2 of 3 of my kids are susceptible to motion sickness and sometimes can't even watch movies in the car.

We always take toys and coloring books. My kids are car sleepers. Most of the time, for long trips, they nap in the car.
