R.I.P Maya Angelou

My heart was sad to learn that Maya Angelou has passed on. This world has lost such a force, and I envy heaven for the angel it has gained. Please share your favorite Maya Angelou works here to honor such an amazing woman.

I know why the caged bird sings

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

I put that poem on my FB wall this morning too. It was the very first thing I can remember reading from her and that poem gave me chills. The book was fantastic too, did you read it Alissa?

I loved her work, truly. Heart of a Woman was my favorite book by her though. Probably because it focused a lot on her relationship with her son, and of course as a mother I could relate to a lot of her feelings.

I always admired her poetry and writing. She was one of my favorites. I wasn't aware she passed away until and FB posting.
