Calling Dibs on Baby Names

This was a really interesting dilemma presented by Parents Magazine. A woman, Vanessa, has always wanted to name a boy Sebastian. Both her and her husband have loved the name since before they had children. The problem is a close friend of theirs named their son Sebastian a year ago.

Now Vanessa is expecting a boy and asked her friend if they minded if she named him sebastian. They weren't exactly thrilled to share the name. Now Vanessa doesn't know what to do. The friend lives in another country but they talk all the time. She doesn't want to risk their friendship but she also doesn't like any of the plan B names they've come up with.

I won't lie, It would bother me if someone got to a name I liked before me. I probably wouldn't use the name just because I would feel weird about it. I would be pretty disappointed though. However, If I was on the other side of the issue I don't think it would bother me too much. If one of my friends said they were gonna name their kid Avery I wouldn't mind much. I mean, everyone would know my Avery came first so if it doesn't bother them, why should I care?

What would you do if someone 'stole' your dream baby name?

I don't think anyone is going to use ours, but I suppose I wouldn't care since no one owns names to begin with. The only ones who own a name, is the person who has it. I own the name, "Melissa." Lol

My kids are: Jonah (my biological son) and Jaina (my step-daughter).

That's why we had babies first ;) Just kidding!!

But seriously, if I was in this situation I would use the name. If it was going to bother me having a friend with a baby with the same name, I'm sure I'd find one that I liked more, and if I couldn't find one I liked more it probably just means that the same name thing doesn't bother me as much as I may have thought.

Yeah its kind of silly. I wanted to name one of my girls Lacy Mae but my friend had picked that for her daughter and at first I was like I don't want her to think that I am copying off of her. Then I realized I was being silly. However my fiance wasn't a huge fan of the name so we went in another direction.

I was supposed to be named Brittany. My mom told a close family friend (also pregnant with a girl) that she planned to name me Brittany Nicole and asked if she had any names yet, and was told "no, not yet." Well... They had their daughter first and used the name Brittany Marie. My mom was furious. Luckily I was two weeks late so my parents could come up with another name they both liked. My mom threw out Rachel and Phoebe, but my dad vetoed those.

So... here I am. Jessika Nicole.

My oldest daughter and oldest neice share the same middle name. My youngest daughter has my second oldest neice's middle name (not on purpose..didn't even click lol). We only avoid names if they are in the immediate family (cousins).
