Lost Pets

I was looking around to see what sort of pets people had in need of homes...and there are a LOT of lost pets. Almost always with a collar, but no tag. Just...why? Or dogs found with a collar but no tag. That was something I was always told was important, since we grew up with a lot of animals. I know when we get our puppy, I'm going to give it a collar with tags of its name and our address/phone number. I've found pets before and they had their tags like that and I managed to return them to their homes. So, please. Tag your pets. So many sob stories of lost pets or pets escaping the back yard or something and they have a collar but no tags. Tags are helpful! Why have a collar if you're not going to give it at least a name tag?

And make sure the info is current! When I worked at a vets office people were always bringing in animals they had found and we would look them up but the info was old so we still couldn't find the owners.

They could, but they could also be lazy and have a spouse or their kids do it. I've known people like that. The owner of the lost/returned pet was so grateful that the person went through all the trouble, but I know they didn't, they had their teenager do all the actual work. Some people might be willing to feed/water/make posters/an ad, but to find more time out of a work schedule or something to go to a vet and do that? I don't think most people would take the time. I'm not saying to not microchip, but it's also a good idea to spend the 10 bucks for a tag or two with the dog's name and your phone number.

The only problem I have with microchips is that they can be expensive and thee still is not one machine that scans for any type of chip. So your pet could be chiped and if the scanner doesn't pick up on that type of chip it doesn't do any good. Plus you still have to have your pet licensed with all the info. Because the pet has to have their rabies shots in order to be licensed but not to be microchipped.
