Do you split the tab?

I have heard people say how uncomfortable this situation can be. If someone invites you out to dinner do you assume they are picking up the tab? Do you offer to split the tab? Do you specify before even ordering that you are on a separate ticket? If you are sharing a ticket is it common etiquette that both people should spend about the same amount, not more or less?

I never assume and always offer. That at least gets the conversation rolling, and most people don't pick me up on my offer to cover. I went to lunch with a work bud yesterday, though, and since our orders were similar, we split it down the middle.
For me it really depends on the situation. It depends who I'm with, how I happened to be out with them, where we are... there's too many factors to give you a real answer ;)
