Munchausen's by Proxy

Have you ever heard of this scary phenomenon? There are parents and caregivers in the world who either fake or exacerbate an illness in a child in order to bring attention to themselves. It's a very scary illness because boundaries are not always recognized by those who suffer from this.

I am going to include an article below about this for those people who may not have heard of this. If you are concerned that someone you may know is exhibiting these behaviors it is best to get them help, they have an illness and it needs to be treated.

I've only heard of Munchausen's due to watching House. How scary that a parent or caregiver would put a child through that!

This is a very real disease that is very difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to treat. I knew a woman who had this and she was a master at convincing everyone, especially the medical community, that she and her family were sick with a variety of ailments. Every week one or multiple family members were in the hospital or at one doctor or another. Even if a doctor suspects this as Munchausen's, it is very difficult to prove. I was told the only way to help the person is to convince them they need help.

Wow! When I taught school years ago, a 5th grade girl and her mother were sick about 3/4 of the year! I was just out of college and felt sorry for them. One day another mother said to me, "Nobody is that sick." I really wondered after that if they were having allergic reactions (dad smoked) or if they were hypochondriacs. Mom was obese, but the girl was fine. It was a shame if mom's "wanting to be sick" was passed on to her daughter.

I think there was another article shared about this but I am not sure the actual name for it was mentioned. I just cannot imagine.

Its awful. Parents who would do things like this do not deserve to have children. There obviously is a mental instability.
