Seizures caused by high fevers

Febrile seizures are caused by high fevers.During a febrile seizure, a child often loses consciousness and shakes or becomes completely rigid. They usually only last a minute or two but can last as long as 15 minutes. Generally the child's fever is more then 102 degrees at the time of the seizure.

If your child has a seizure place them gently on the ground. Carpet is best. turn them on their side and remive any objects from their mouth. Time the seizure from the beginning. If it lasts longer then 10min take them to a hospital immediately. If it's shorter then that just call you doctor once the convulsions stop. They'll want to examine the child to determine the cause of the fever and provide any necessary medication. Usually they just need fever reducing meds like Tylenol.

Febrile seizures are scary but generally harmless. It's very rare to have any long term side effects.

Has Avery ever had a febrile seizure? We have been lucky in that none of ours have, but I have a friend who's son gets them frequently :(

It does sound pretty scary, glad the seizures are generally harmless.
