Pets and Kids?

Do you have pets? How did/do they act with your kids?

We have been fortunate enough to have really great experiences. Our dog got much more protective when I got pregnant, and is very protective of the kids, but shows them no aggression - only the people that touch them without first hugging me or my husband. She doesn't bite, but she makes it clear she is very unhappy with them touching our babies. We also have a cat that we got shortly after Hayden was born. She is amazing and tolerates so much "love" from the kids.

I know when I was pregnant for the first time, we really stressed a lot about how the dog (and the cats we had at that time) would handle an addition to the family. Is that something you worried about? What did you do to prepare your pets for a baby?

We were a little because the dog was still a hyper puppy when our son came. She is tougher on him than Eva-but he also plays rougher. She used to look in the play pen every time he moved, we have pictures of her resting her head on the edge of the play pen and watching him. We were nervous about the cat now when Grace came because the cat likes to sleep on the kids' heads-but Andrew was put on 'cat duty'-keeping the cat away so now the cat barely goes near the baby for fear of Andrew coming.

We have a 1 year old dog. We got her when our daughter was 11 months old. Our dog is great with our daughter. She lets her do anything to her. We couldn't ask for a more easy going dog to have around.

We don't have a pet -yet- but in a couple months I'm looking into getting a beagle or a yorkie or a shih tzu...I've always had good experiences with pets and kids, with the exception of my mom's young german shepard who is still too hyper for his own good and doesnt seem to understand he's too big to be romping with babies. When I was little, my family had tons of dogs, and one of them, Jessie-dog, would get in the playpen with me. My first word was "woof" lol

We do have pets. We have two dogs, Labs. One male and one female. At first it took our male dog quite a while to warm up to our daughter but he was never aggressive towards her, he just would avoid her. The female has become super protective, almost over protective and has started to show some aggression towards strangers. We don't really know what to do. She has never bitten anyone or anything but she growls and barks like crazy. But she is always gentle with us and the baby.

I have two small dogs. I have a mini Dachshund and a Chihuahua-mystery mix. They love kids and are very protective of my children, especially Saedee (the mix). Sebastian, my mini Dachshund, was a little jealous when my son was born. He still thinks he can share my lap when I am holding my son. So, like any good parent, I scoot one son over for the other child. Lol I tell people, I have four kids. I have two two-legged ones and two-four legged ones. Lol
Sebastian also believes he needs to be held, too. And likes to be held with his head on my shoulder (just like my son). I suppose my children are a bit spoiled.

We want to get a bigger dog later. I am wanting a Golden Retriever because they are excellent with children or a Labrador.

My dogs and our cat (before he passed away), would love on my belly, especially our cat. He would wrap his arms around my belly and place his head wherever my son was at--it was so sweet. He also slept with my step-daughter and would play with her when she was over. We miss him, dearly.

When we arrived home with my son, we showed the dogs the baby. They sniffed him, wagged their tails, and got excited. We didn't have a problem with them and the new edition--other than Sebastian wanting to share my lap.

we have two cats, one does not really care that James is around and the other almost acts like a mother hen, lol. when I was pregnant our female cat would curl up on my belly and if James was to kick, she would gently put her paw on my stomach. She loves James so much. Our male cat is older and he tends to steer clear of James especially now that James is more mobile.

I have one cat now, the Pooh Bear, and she's actually really wonderful with Maddie--better than she has any right to be as an elderly cat.
