Raising children without a specific religion?

I have mentioned on here before that I am agnostic. For those who don't know what that means, I believe in a higher power but I don't believe that we know all of the details. That's my interpretation anyhow, but another agnostic may have a slightly different definition depending on their own spiritual pull.

So, how do you raise kids if you don't have a specific religion? Well, I am a strong supporter of the idea that we are all on our own spiritual journey and we need to make those kind of decisions for ourselves. If my children picked a religion I would be perfectly fine with that and very accepting. In the meantime we talk very frankly about spiritual matters and I make sure to include what different religions believe. I'm giving them the information and expecting them to follow their path without standing in the way and directing it.

I know many people don't agree with this, which is fine. This is what works for my family though.

I was raised Catholic, and my husband is atheist, so we too are raising our daughter without a specific religion. I find it a little difficult at times, because my husband has virtually no spiritual side, while I find myself to be very spiritual, although I try to be private about it. I also respect his decisions, and I am comfortable with letting our daughter find her own path. It does change the way we experience holidays as a family, though. My holidays were always church-centric, and it's odd to have Christmas without midnight mass, for example. But we are both good people, and I think it will be interesting to see if my daughter finds her path without learning it from her parents.

I married someone who has the same belief system that I do and we are trying to raise our children the same way. Only time will tell if they choose it on their own.

My husband and I were both raised in the same religion and we are raising our children the same way. They are very smart and live by what we have taught them and still teaching them:)
