Bleeding during pregnancy: implantation vs ectopic

Implantation bleeding would happen before your missed period and before you could have a positive pregnancy test. Implantation bleeding is usually just a few drops of blood and it happens when the fertilized egg implants into the uterus. Once the egg implants you are officially pregnant.

Bleeding from an ectopic pregnancy usually starts after 5 weeks of your pregnancy. Bleeding is often accompanied by cramping. If you suspect you have an ectopic pregnancy you need to see your doctor right away because it can be live threatening if left untreated.
