Postpartum pre-eclampsia is pretty rare but it can happen. Generally pre-eclampsia will start during your third trimester. Pre-eclamsia will cause swelling and headaches in the mother. Your doctor will most likely notice your blood pressure if high and you may have protein and blood in your urine. If you have pre-eclampsia during or after pregnancy you often need medications to help lower your blood pressure to a safer range. They can also give you medication to help get rid of the excess fluid your body has accumulated. If you have excessive swelling, headaches, vision disturbances or high blood pressure during or after pregnancy you should call your doctor right away.
