car seat and grocery cart

Do you put your car seat in the top basket of the grocery cart? or the big part of the grocery part? I have read online about the dangers of putting it on the top and my husband thinks I am overreacting. Do you think I am just being an overprotective FTM?

I WISH my baby would go in a carrier, but so far she doesn't like any of them. :(

Its safe and recommended for the car seat to be placed in the big part, not on top. If you put the car seat up top on the shopping cart it could slide off, theres no way to keep it restrained on top.

It just doesn't feel safe to me on the top. And when there are two of us shopping I see no reason to put it on top. It always causes an argument because my husband always puts it on the top. I guess he did that with his other kids, with his ex wife. If there are two of us, I would rather be safe then sorry, and just use two carts. He doesn't agree.

As a CPST (car seat tech) please know I'm not trying to be preachy or scare you with this post....

DO NOT put it on the top. It's insanely dangerous both while you are in the store... and then when you leave the store as well! Seats are not designed to be put up there, and even if you think you hear them click and "lock" into place, they aren't - a small bump can get them to unlatch from the cart and fall off. Not just that - check out this video - the cart isn't balanced once you put the seat on the top and so it's super easy to flip the entire seat.

Not only are the dangers present to your baby while in the store, but almost all seats have something in the manual stating that using it on the top of the seat voids any safety warranties as the cart can do damage to the system that locks the seat into the base. The Baby Trend seat is the only seat I know of that allows the seat to be placed on top of the cart, stating that it will not damage the locking mechanism, but you do still run the risk of it falling off or flipping over.

The large basket is the only place a carseat should be placed in a shopping cart. Personally, I prefer to use a carrier and babywear as putting the seat in the basket takes up most of the room for groceries!

It depends on how much I need to buy or what store I'm in because, some stores have smaller carts than others.

I am a FTM of baby Isabella. I have three stepkids, who are 15, 18, and 22. I am a photographer, and work part time at a restaurant. My husband had a vasectomy and we had the reversal done and I got pregnant just two weeks later!
