Opinions on getting help from the state

So my SO and I have been talking about getting assistance from the state, for me this is a very tough situation because I feel there are more people in the country worse off then we are that need the help. But his opinion is that it is only a short time we will need the extra help, until I can get back to work part time when the baby is old enough and that every little bit will help in the long run. Did any of you moms consider getting extra help?

There is nothing wrong with getting help. If you qualify and are being completely honest on your application and you are approved you have nothing to feel guilty about. Take the help when you need it, especially if it is just for a short period of time.

We are not married yet, so I don't know if I would include him in the paper work how ever he is the financial provider and we do have joined banking so I'm thinking we would end up "making to much to get assistance"

If you live together then you need to provide his income, it is required according to the paperwork and lying or not including him is considered fraud. Most of the paperwork says that it doesn't matter if you are married or not, what matters is if you live together.

The state is also known for going after the dad to pay for medical care and assistance that they paid the mom. So not including him on the paperwork can come back to bite him in the ass later.

Sheila when can I apply for WIC if that is what we decide to do, we are moving to another state in 5 weeks. So would it be better to go from that point after we get moved in?

I'm not sure what help you mean, exactly, but I received Medicaid while I was pregnant, and Nina was given it for the first year of her life, since I had to leave my job because of the baby and we had no insurance at all. They paid for everything 100% and I don't regret it one bit. The only inconvenience it caused me was occasionally having to fill out paperwork and wait maybe an hour.

Fortunately, Luke and I both have great insurance so the baby will be covered in that department. We were talking more the lines of WIC or food stamps things like that.

We did this to get us through a rough time and back on our feet. I got laid off last June while I was pregnant. It was kind of expected but also a surprise. I couldn't get another job and we decided I would just stay home with the kids. We recently dropped WIC because we no longer need it. But we also are getting food stamps so we thought it was silly to take advantage of both if we did not need both. But now that my fiance is pulling in more money we can probably drop those soon also. If you are 100% honest with them and you qualify then they obviously believe you need some help. It's not as easy as most people think to qualify. We had a lot of problems getting approved and we both weren't working at the time and I was pregnant. Since we own our own place they want proof of how we were paying for everything and you can't just say you are using what money you have saved up or scraping money together. Those aren't acceptable answers to them. Good luck! And take as much help as you can get! Having a baby is a lot. Any extra help is a godsend.

Katieis absolutely right. When one applies for SSI for their child, for example, they count income from any adult than you live with. I am separated so I would not have to list his income. Marital status is not as important as living arrangements.

I also agree100% that there is nothing wrong with seeking help. Lots of people have asked for a bit of help at some point. And you've contributed to the funds with your paychecks. Take the help without being embarrassed.
