How much do NEWBORNS sleep!
So obviously I have been hunting around at sleep cycles, patterns, schedules.. the whole nine yards, especially since a newborn will be arriving at our home before any other age ;)
Anyways.. it was interesting to learn that they actually sleep up to 16-17 hours a day... so why do parents complain about lack of sleep right? Well the kicker is that they only sleep for 2-4 hours at a time.. their REM cycle kicks in MUCH faster than an adult, most likely due to all the growing their lil brain needs.. thus waking up, eating.. and going right back to it. But for the parents.. this isn't normal.. as you grow you sleep longer for less periods of time.. thus when a baby is 6-8 weeks they should be sleeping longer through the night and less through the day.. key word..
Tell me.. how long did it take for YOU to get in a decent groove with your baby and a brand new sleep pattern? I appreciate honesty too :)
I wish I had slept with all my babies from the start because after 1 and 2 I really couldn't say I was sleep deprived because I rested when they did. With nursing I didn't have to get up in the middle of the night to warm bottles I helped baby latch on, flipped to the other side if need be and we'd fall back to sleep together. Mama and baby will sleep on the same cycle. I'd wake up to slightest movements as baby rooted to be fed. I found that so much easier than having baby in her own room and getting up turning on lights waking us both up fully and sitting up to nurse her, which I did with my first....But that's just my experience. We all have to do what we think is best for our family.
