Gestational diabetes and delivery: any risks?

Gestational diabetes can cause potential risks for delivery. If you gestational diabetes is well controlled and the size of your baby is in the normal range your risks shouldn't be any greater than any other mom. If your gestational diabetes is not well controlled or if your baby is larger than normal you are at an increased risk of complications.

The most common complication is a baby that is too big not being able to fit in the birth canal and getting stuck during labor. Some gestational diabetes pregnancies will be induced early to help avoid this potential complication. In some cases the doctor will suggest a scheduled c-section delivery instead of a vaginal delivery.

Ask your doctor if you have any increased risk due to your gestational diabetes. Your doctor should be able to go over all your options and the risks and benefits or each option.
