Vaginal discharge after pregnancy: always bloody?

Yes, all women will bleed after delivery. The amount of blood will vary woman to woman and pregnancy to pregnancy. Vaginal discharge after delivery is called lochia. Lochia is a mix of blood, amniotic fluid and uterine lining. Lochia starts out bright red and will taper off to brown within a few days, then it will turn yellowish to clear. It is common to have some bright red bleeding again after your discharge turned brown. Your body is cleaning itself out and healing from the pregnancy and delivery. Your blood vessels that supplied uterus are closing off. Your uterus is going to contract and shrink back down to it's pre-pregnancy size.
