Big kid illnesses. False croup.

False croup - is laryngeal edema, in which the child becomes difficult to breathe.

We are faced with this disease at age of 4. On that day, there were no signs of trouble, we came back home from a walk, my son ate, went to the showerl, all as usual and went to bed. Somewhere in the 12 o'clock at night I heard a terrible cough, it was like the dog barks. I decided to give the baby warm milk with honey and butterI thought he just has a sore throat, but he could not drink it. And then he started to choke, he gasped for air and his face turned blue. My husband immediately began to call for an ambulance. Ambulance arrived very quickly, they gave him an injection and said that this is a false croup. They said that we need to go to the hospital.

Now, every time he starts to cough, I am scared.

Croup usually occurs a few days after the start of a cold and is usually caused by the same viruses that cause the common cold. Croup is contagious. It causes swelling and narrowing in the voice box, windpipe, and breathing tubes that lead to the lungs. This can make it hard for your child to breathe.
Breathing in moist air seems to help during a croup attack. Fill your bathroom with steam from the hot water faucets, and sit in the room with your child for 10 minutes. Or hold your child directly over a humidifier, and let the vapor blow directly in his or her face.
If your child’s symptoms don't get better after 30 minutes, call or see your doctor. If the attack is in the middle of the night and you are very worried, consider taking your child to the emergency room.

        That would be very scary.

Mine are like Leah's and can be fine during the day but the coughing at night can keep them awake.

Is croup and whooping cough the same or different?

As far as I know, it's different. False croup is caused by a conventional virus and whooping cough - the causative agent of pertussis-toxin, which is characterized by great vitality in the trachea. False croup can not last for months. This is an acute condition. It can occur within 2 months a few times, but it will be few false croup, but not the same .A typical whooping cough occurs when a child is not ill anymore for a few weeks, but the cough, begins to grow and becomes spasmodic.
