How is your summer going?

Hey everyone!

How is your summer going?

I have been super busy with my kids and work. We have traveled a bunch too. The kids are having a great summer. We have been to the zoo, aquariums, fairs, Disneyland, museums, etc. I am hoping to slow down soon.

I would love to hear about your summer!

Our farm has been keeping us very busy. We went strawberry several times and raspberry picking two times already in the past two days! We love berry season!

We have been going to the library weekly for the reading program. The children have been reading up a storm to earn prizes.

We have helped a couple of friends out by taking care of their animals but we really have not gone anywhere, other than a 4th of July party last weekend, even then my husband and older son stayed home. It has been hard to get altogether, especially with our goats, who are escape artists! We were given some closer woven fencing so we are hoping to rectify that very soon!

Random question Theresa Gould, when do your chickens usually start laying eggs? Our chickens this year haven't started yet and it has been 5 months I think. Last year our chickens started at 3 months.

Usually between 16-20 weeks. We had a couple of late stragglers and ours were 5-6 months in March because we recently found a couple of pullet eggs! Our three year old was so excited! I've read it can be as late as 27 weeks! Is that incredible or what? Yours should start laying soon, I would think. Or at least some of them.

Last year we only had chickens so we fed them layer feed. This year we have ducks and chickens so we feed flock raiser. We are wondering if the different food is the reason. But they told us layer feed isn't safe for the ducks so we can't change.

We only started layer once they were laying or just before, though hubby was just talking to our daughter saying our younger flock of 50 should be on starter feed not layer because they are not getting as big as they should be. They are suppose to start laying in August/September and they are still itty bitty or at least we think they are.

Interesting about the ducks and layer feed, we feed ours layer and that's what we were told was ok. We just got our ducks last week, a CSA member gifted us a trio of Pekin ducks, but they were feeding them Purina dog chow and since we are an organic farm we cannot and will not use it. I'm new to ducks and wouldn't have though of dog food for them.

They told us starter and layer feed usually are medicated and the medicated kinds are not safe for ducks. Flock feed is what they said was safe.

Wow! You guys have been busy!
We have just been hanging out at home and gone to the coast a few times. With my husband just starting a new job he doesn't have any vacation time yet so we are just staying close to home :-)

Ugh, my summer is going crazy. James decided he would have a molar come in during the hottest time of the summer, so it's a double dose of cranky pants right now. Plus David and I are planning our wedding, and also getting ready to move at the end of the month or so.

Hey - sounds like you all have been having fun! We planned on traveling to the zoo, but it looks like we may have to wait until next year.

Going great. We have been to the lake four times this year. The Aquarium once. Making crafts and doing activities with Autumn has been fun. My mommy's outdoor group has been a great experience so far. Apple Orchard was fun. We have Autumn's beauty pageant next month and going to go to the beach while we are in San Diego. It's going going and I hope for more adventures before the summer ends!

We are not as busy as everyone on this post, that's for sure! We have gone to the park as a family and also with Colton's friend and his mom who has been my best friend since we were 5. We have gone to the local library for read aloud and arts and crafts. We went to Vegas in the spring and Colton was amazed at all of the "castles" and we could hardly get him to leave circus circus. He is a thrill seeker! It has been so humid and hot here though that mommy doesn't want to do Nything!
