Minimum wage- for or against?

President Obama has made raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour over the next 3 years.
I am for minimum wage to protect the workers at the lowest rung of the socio-economic ladder. However, I don't think that $10.10 per hour is enough to support your family.

No matter what if you raise minimum wage then the cost of living WILL go up to meet the wage increase. It always has and always will. The key is not to raise minimum wage but to lower the cost of higher education so it is more readily available to everyone so they can earn a better wage at a better job. Education is the key...not minimum wage. Raising minimum wage is a short term solution to a long term problem.

But fixing the problem short term creates a bigger long term problem. When the short term solution runs out we are still in the same situation...or our economy is worse. Minimum wage jobs are not meant to be jobs to support a family. Yes, sometimes people have to take what they can get but it's not supposed to be a career. I've worked plenty of minimum wage jobs because I had too, but you take them for what they are. Not to mention that the people who are already making $10 an hour will now be added to the "poor" category so we are only creating an even bigger problem. Because no matter what companies or the government says, most of those employees will not see a wage increase. The only way to fix it is with long term solutions.

Raising minimum wage has never worked to create better lives for anyone. I don't think we should do away with it because that would just be frightening! But once people make more money the cost of everything else will go up. And employers won't hire as many people...I wish it wasn't that way. It would be great if companies were not so greedy and wouldn't pass the cost down but sadly they do. We should own all the companies and then we could do it right :-) the world would probably be a MUCH better place if Moms were in control of economics.

But also how many of those degrees are not for industries that are growing? The majority of degrees are business degrees, a field that already has too many people. And no matter what, when you raise minimum wage the cost of living will go up. The more we raise minimum wage and give tax breaks to the super rich the closer we get to having a two class society...rich and poor. The middle class will become a thing of the past. It's already on its way out and that would just push it all the way out.

And not even a traditional degree. If the government would offer students financial aid for things like certificate programs and career schools we would be so much better off! My husband spent 5 months getting a pharmacy tech certificate and makes more money now than a lot of people with a traditional degree. Because the field he went into is in high demand.

Well my husband did his online and only paid just under $400 and it's a place that most people have heard of so employers liked that. It would save us a lot of money if we financed that instead of expensive degrees that do no good in the long run.

It's so crazy to me that they don't offer financial aid for those programs. Especially since the medical field is moving more and more to hiring people from those schools.

I agree with you. They have always raised the cost of living (and even the cost of food) once minimum wage was raised so they can meet the increase--it what it will cost them.

They need to increase it to at least $12.00 per hour.

And sadly where I live, a suburb of Buffalo NY, $11 is a higher wage than most. I do agree though that any raise in wages ultimately results in the cost of living going up. But I also feel that the areas people live in and the types of jobs available in them make paying for higher education useless unless a person plans on moving away. I know a lot of people in my area with college degrees, of many different types, sitting right next to me at work getting paid the same amount as me. Many of those that use the degrees that they obtained had to move away to do.

If all depends on location. That being said I'm against. As it is, without the min wage jumping up we are barely making by with what we have. It really makes me worry. I just hope the food marker price doesn't rise immediately.

I'm against it. The only thing I see happening is the cost of living going up to meet the wages. If you raise wages you are going to have to raise prices to meet those wages.

It's wrong. We need costs lowered. All this will do is put small businesses out of business because they won't be able to afford to pay employees that. If wages go up, prices go up for everyone so businesses-small or large-can afford to pay employees. It won't help anything, it will just make things get worse for everybody.

I would have to say I am against it. I agree cost of living will go up… and at this point I am having a hard enough time as it is. I feel like slowly but surely we are getting rid of the middle class. I do agree that people are not paid enough to live but raising minimum wage will not fix that. I think this will hurt our country more than it will help it. Hopefully cost of living will only go up a little.
