How do you get your kid to keep reading during summer?

I'm having a hard time motivating my 10 year old son to read books during summer break. Any good ideas?

I kids love reading, we set a goal. For every 5 books he read, we had a day of whatever he wanted to do.we did ALOT of fishing and 4wheeling.lol

We signed up for the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, where you track your time spent reading and can win prizes. It's working pretty well.

Harry Potter. Yes they may have seen the movies but the movies have left out so many details. I would challenge your child to find 100 'details' that are in the books but not in the movies. I'm sure your child will find 100 details or more per book and once your child realizes the book has more to offer he may just want to keep on reading.

If he has already ready Harry Potter ask the librarian about a dragon series. I'm not sure what it's called but I've been told I should read the series and all I remember is it's about a dragon.

My children are smaller so all it takes right now to get them to read and to want to read is to organize the books and lay a few out that they haven't seen in a while and to leave the t.v. off. We like Sesame Street, Daniel Tiger, Peg + Cat, and a few others so it's 'good' television.

When I was younger I loved the book mobile - do you know if they will come to your neighborhood? My children would rather play with their new books than toys so we read a lot.

My husband and I started a book club with our 15 year old. One or two nights a week we have a theme night, light candles, get the reading light for the book and enjoy an hour or two taking turns reading 10-15 pages each. Then we discuss what we have read and the message being sent by the author of the book. This year we chose "A Brave New World". We let our him choose the themes each gathering. So far he has had themes like: ice cream social, root beer float night, cookie night, sushi evening & seafood night. It goes well and it gives us a chance to have some special time with just him while the baby is sleeping.

I think this idea could be carried out for any age child. Just make the time frame shorter pending on the age and if they are scared of the dark, give them their own flashlight to hold!! :)

Find something they would be interested in. My library offers prizes depending on how many books they read plus I make my kids read a certain amount a day before they are allowed to do anything else.

Depending on the age I usually have them always help in the kitchen preparing meals, cause they all like to help cook. So I have them either read the instructions, pour in pre-measured ingredients, or have them measure themselves. It helps them read, follow instructions, & helps with math skills as well
