"The day I left my son in the car"

This is a very powerful article and speaks to the rise of helicopter parenting and how small decisions can be criminalized these days. While I don't think what she did was her best parenting moment, I don't think it is criminal! There are parents I have seen who feed their toddlers Taco Bell every day or take 6 year olds to 10 pm showings of scary movies because they won't pay for babysitters. Those parents aren't criminals, and I would argue that what they are doing is far more harmful to the child! I'm not advocating leaving children in cars as a matter of course - obviously not - but I just think the reaction of the bystander and the police in this case was beyond the pale. What do you think?

Fair enough. I don't really leave my kids in the car, either, esp not the younger ones. But if that "good Samaritan" wanted to help, why not wait with the car rather than taking a video and contacting police. I don't think it's a great decision, but I also don't think it's criminal!

It just makes me sick what she had to go through. I understand why she did what she did but I also don't think it was criminal. It was a lapse in judgement.

That's exactly how I feel about it, Theresa!

I'm a working mom of 4. My husband, kids and I live in Toronto, Canada. I love to read pretty much anything I can get my hands on, am addicted to chocolate and kissing my kids' necks (they all still let me do it!) and am a bit of a political junkie.
