Helmets and Bike Use

How strict are you about your child wearing a helmet when riding a bike?

I see lots of kids riding bikes without helmets and I wonder why? Is it that the parent's don't know any better? That they think it's silly? They don't think their kid will fall? I just don't know why you would skip the helmet.

I don't know why, either. My son knows the rules: absolutely no bike riding without a helmet. The added protection from a $15, 2 seconds to snap on item seems simple enough, especially since it is legally required in most places. I wonder if some parents just have the good old "but we never wore helmets as kids, and we survived" attitude? I hear that about enough other simple safety issues, after all.
