It's dangerous for the unborn baby. At least that's what they said a decade ago.

She doesn't have it, but her older daughter does, and so there's a risk she is already infected and just doesn't know yet.

I caught fifth disease during my pregnancy and it passed to my baby. My baby was very sick and she was given less than a 1% chance to survive. Fifth disease killed almost all of her red blood cells and bone marrow. It caused severe hydrops fetalis and heart failure. She only survived because she received an intrauterine blood transfusion at 23 weeks gestation. We are very lucky she survived, most babies don't.

Oh wow, Katie, that must have been very scary!! Which of your children did this happen with? If you don't mind, I'm going to send you a private message.

I'm a working mom of 4. My husband, kids and I live in Toronto, Canada. I love to read pretty much anything I can get my hands on, am addicted to chocolate and kissing my kids' necks (they all still let me do it!) and am a bit of a political junkie.
