Shopping with young ones

I know it isn't always easy or fun to shop with the wee ones, but sometimes it is a necessary evil.

How do you keep your kids entertained? How do you deal with public tantrums?

I know I chose to raise these kids, but sometimes it would be nice if the woman who was alone and had a shopping list 10 miles long would let me, the woman with 2 energetic, slightly naughty, possibly screaming kids, and only a handful of items go ahead of her.

I usually go first thing in the morning. The kids seem to be more calm and will behave for longer. We sing songs in the grocery store-especially when waiting in line and try to only go to stores with kid carts they can be buckled into. If we have to go to ones that don't, we do those first.
I go on once a month shopping trips that last aroun 2 hours in stores then 2 hours of driving both ways with a 4 year old, 2 year old and 7 month old. :D
