I thought this was an interesting picture. I don't know how accurate it is, but I would love to hear your thoughts.
Should minimum wage be increased?
Yeah, I don't think we need $21 an hour here, in most parts of the country COL is not so high that we couldn't live on less. I just wish minimum wage would at least be a liveable wage, ya know? I can't even imagine making minimum wage at this point in my life. It would be hard to survive.
It is important to take into account the taxes in other countries are higher than here in the U.S., that being said they also get free healthcare and other services for free or minimal cost that are not free in the States. I think the biggest problem is cost of living. Anyone with children is screwed. Have you seen how much daycare costs? We don't have the programs like other countries to subsidize childcare or give parents paid maternity leave. If you are single or even a two person working no children household, it might be tough but you might be able to get by on minimum wage. Anyone with kids, especially young kids or a family with one working parent, it is tough!
In those countries, there are many things that are much, much more expensive than here. It almost balances out, but I do think we are trailing behind a bit.
