Okay.. so I have to ask/inquire/get opinions on the following that happened while chatting with a friend.
Let me preface my saying she is young, my age, has 3 kids - 4 - 2 1/2 - and 9 months.. she stays at home with them, doesn't work or doesn't have a ton of hobbies.. kind of sad :(
Anyways.. her kids (to me) are notorious for not behaving the best. The discipline is few and far between and has always left me scratching my head after visiting with them. I tried to tell myself, you don't have kids yet, don't judge.. but I am starting to realize this is not the way I would do it all. They are the family that lets their kids bang silverware when out to eat and don't flinch! Don't take it away.. or don't say no.. it's insane.
Anyways.. I was talking to her the other day and she was telling me how crazy, stubborn and awful her 2 1/2 year old is sometimes.. so I asked.. oh gosh.. so how do you discipline a 2 1/2 year old... THINKING I would get real examples of things they do... when she ever so frankly replies.. "you don't"... WHAT! Yes you do. I realize they can only understand so much.. but someone help me out here! If a child knows they are being rotten, there are ways to discipline regardless of age.. am I right?
I just know we would parent very differently from them.
Sometimes, and I'm not trying to make excuses, but a child will act out due to tiredness, hunger, just to get mom's attention and if vocabulary is limited it may take some creativity to get them to communicate with words rather than bratty behavior.
