Afrin while nursing?

I'm so congested I can't breath or sleep. I bought Afrin but it says don't use while nursing. I have call my doctor to find out but no answer.

My guess is it's got sudafed which dries you up which puts your milk in danger of drying up... But then, I have a bottle of morning sickness pills that say do not take while pregnant... so it could just be the company covering it's butt.

I did not know it could dry me up. I will just use when really necessary like bedtime.

It shouldn't dry you up if you are rarely using it.

That's what I was told about sudafed (pseudophedrine I think on the drug facts).. If I get sick to the point where I need something I take a child's dose and drink a ton. If I don't drink extra water I do notice a decline in milk.

Ok, from what I can find very little research has been done with this drug and breastfeeding. It is very similar to other common decongestants which are generally considered safe. A very little amount of the drug should reach the infants blood stream because a very little amount even gets in the mothers blood stream. You will need to determine if it is worth the risk to you because there is no clear yes or no answer. Personally I would be fine talking it, especially if I wasn't nursing a newborn.
