Which is better ( read: easier) to have as a pet: a cat or a dog?

I really like dogs, but we don't have an opportunity to get one right now. But...do you think cats are more independent and are generally cheaper?

I like dogs, but I'm definitely a cat person. I think I'm drawn to them because we have similar attitudes. I have two cats. Kiki (aka Punk Kitty) is a spotted tabby, coming up on 2 years old. I just got my other cat this weekend. He is an all-black 2-month-old kitten named Bruce Wayne (the shelter had named him Batman, so we ran with it). My cats are adorable, funny, majestic, and know how to keep themselves busy. I don't have to take them outside to go to the bathroom, they clean themselves for the most part, and they don't jump all over you or slobber or poo on the carpet. Cleaning the litter box isn't the funnest chore, but it's a sacrifice I can cope with. I mean, I already change diapers, so what's the big deal? I view my cats as smaller, furrier children. And quieter. MUCH quieter!

On a side note, I'm a big advocate for pet adoption, as well as spaying/neutering cats, including the TNR (trap, neuter, release) program. Both of my kitties were shelter cats, and both have been fixed.
...none of the above... I love our pets (shh, don't tell anybody lol), but they are pains... Can't leave the dog or she tears stuff up. The cat claws everything and I have a litter box to empty, plus the extra expenses... If I had a choice, I wouldn't have any.
Cat's I'm sure are cheaper. BUT you have to teach kids right away that cats like their space and don't want to cuddle unless its on their terms. They can get mad very fast and if they do some will pee on the floor, in clothes, their litter boxed need to be cleaned every few days, some don't like kids cause they are loud, some can be mean, and cat scratches and bites can be very dangerous... I love cats and am 100% a cat person. We had one but he died a few months ago. :( I like that you can leave the cat for the weekend and he will be okay as long as he has a clean box food and water. A dog you need someone to watch them, let them out, ect... there are pros and cons to each. Also if you get pregnant again you can NOT change the litter box. There is a very harmful disease that can harm the baby in their poo...
I'm a cat person but mainly because i'm allergic to dogs.
The cat box is the ONLY drawback! But still better than picking up dog-bombs in the grass! We've left our cats to go on vacation for up to a week at a time. We've always had cats, a few yrs ago, we got a dog. Cat's are much easier. They don't have that "dog" smell either. I may be biased because the dog we have is a 100-lb lab who prefers to sit on and take up our entire couch. If we had it to do over, we'd have just cats. No dog, no rabbits, no guinea pig...
