Separation anxiety at 21 months

Hey all! Malachi is 21 months today and within the last week he has been having some major separation anxiety. Every time we leave him in his crib for nap or bed he FREAKS out. I usually rub his back before I leave but every time I put him in there he starts to cry. I feel horrible and I wish he could tell me what's wrong. He never used to do this. And sometimes he will stand back up while I'm rubbing his back and put his arms around me and cry "mommy." Has anyone else gone through this? Any suggestions?

what about getting him a stuffed animal or blanket or something that would comfort him while you are away? my little one started to get this way every time that I would put her in her crib. Since she is not a binky baby, her pediatriciation suggested giving her a little snuggle blanket that she could keep in her crib to comfort her for when she was upset. It took a few days, but we continued to give her the blanket at night when we would put her to bed. Now she goes to sleep comfortably with her snuggle blanket in her crib without the excessive crying because we have put her to bed.

That's a good idea! He has lots of stuffed animals. I'll just have to find one specifically for bed time. I will try it tonight.

James was like that a lot. We found that if he has his favorite snuggle blanket and his two stuffies he usually is okay. David and I also will snuggle with the stuffed animals so they smell like us, so when James falls asleep he can smell us without seeing us.

Sounds like he needs a special stuffed animal and blanket! Thank you!
