Ok mom's I need to know what a lumbar puncture is and will it affect my pregnancy? I need advice please
Hmm.. never ever heard of it.. what is it?
I've heard it's a procedure that doctors stick a series of needles into your spine and get fluid out but I'm so scared of needles that I'm not looking forward to this
Lumbar puncture, or spinal tap, is a procedure when a needle is inserted into your spinal canal, lower back, to collect cerebrospinal fluid for testing. The spinal fluid sample is sent to a lab for analysis. During the procedure a local anesthetic is injected into your lower back to numb the puncture site before the needle is inserted. Takes about 30 minutes. If your doctor knows you're pregnant and he advises to do it, the benefits outweigh the risks.
May I ask why your doctor wants to do it?
I'm having problems with my left eye so they want to do it to see if there is something major going on that can't be seen in an MRI or even in a normal eye exam with dialating my eyes
Ah.. gotcha.. hmm. I would weigh ALL the options and see how much of a risk it could be to the baby for sure.. and yourself as well - both of you are important!
Yes we are. I have to go to an appointment before I actually have the procedure done
