Could be a growth spurt at 6 months, like Meg said. Have you tried taking a nightie you've worn or a shirt (no buttons or zippers or ties) and laid it beside him after you've laid him down so that he "thinks" you are still with him? It's a comfort thing. I did this with all of mine when I wanted to get things done and needed them to stay asleep. Not anything too big that he could entangle himself and not anything over his face, just strategically placed either beside him or beneath his chin so he can smell your scent.

I also went through the same challenges with my last son, now 5 yrs old. You have to be patient and just walk away when you feel like you're going to burst. Even if he's crying just walk away count to 10 and walk back in feeling calmer. If you are stressed then he will sense that and it will only take that much longer for him to go back to sleep.
If you do rock him to sleep, don't wait til he's fully asleep, because you will never stop that cycle. If you put him down and wakes just rub his back or his head and sing to him. Even though my son is 5 he loves when I sing to him and rub his head for him to fall asleep. When he was little I would sing to him and rub his back and he would fall back in no time. They just need to still feel that you are there. Then you can check on him every so often.
I hope that everything has gotten better since you posted this. Hope this helps too.
