I'm O- blood type and my husband didn't know what his blood type was. I had to get an RH factor shot in case the baby had a positive blood type.

They said that because I'm a negative blood type, if the baby turned out to be positive then I could develop an antibody (the RH factor positive IGG antibody) against positive blood types. My body would basically treat any fetus with a positive blood type like a disease and try to kill it. They said It wouldn't effect my first pregnancy because the antibody doesn't develop until after you deliver (or miscarry). It has something to do with the bleeding that happens during childbirth. But if you have any other pregnancy's and the fetus has a positive blood type the antibody could kill the baby.

I got the shot to keep my body from developing that antibody. Which was a good thing because my daughter is O+. If I hadn't had it I would have developed the antibody and potentially terminated my future pregnancies because of it.
