The dreaded day has arrived, My oldest is now interested in getting his driver's permit.

My oldest boy is 17, and is now interested in getting his driver's permit. This is something I have dreaded since my kids were born, partly because the thought of any of my kids being out on the road with drunk drivers, and just plain crazy drivers makes me nervous, and partly because it means they are almost grown up. I'm trying to convince him once he does get his permit, to take a driver's education course, but he isn't into that idea. I would feel better if he did. I tried to tell him it would take a percentage off his insurance payment.....but of course, at his age, saving money isn't a concept he is interested in learning. This was the kid that once told me, " I don't think I will ever want to learn to drive, so you will get to drive me around your whole life." I think I would be okay with that. I went to the DMV and picked up his book to study for the test..waiting for him to actually read it before I schedule the test. :-)

I'm paranoid on the whole driving thing. I knew someone years ago, whose daughter and mother died in an accident that happened when her mother took her daughter out for a driving lesson. I thought about telling my son he cant drive my vehicles unless he takes drivers ed, just because it would ease my mind if he would just take the class.

I'm from Ohio and here you have to take the drivers ed course before you can get your licence. I had to take it when I was younger and I think it helped me a lot. If these aren't the laws where your at I'd still make him take it before I'd let him get his licence. Good Luck!! I dread that day too luckily it'll be a while for me :)

Drivers' Ed isn't required in NY. The only thing that is required is a 5 hour pre-licensing course. I took drivers' ed, as it was offered at my high school. I found it helpful. Like me, my mother was paranoid and couldn't teach me to drive without going completely nuts!

I would just tell him that if he wants his drivers permit that he will take the class period. Your mom you can tell him how it is, especially with something as serious as driving. Im from Ohio and when I got my permit it was required that you take a drivers Ed course and that you have 50 hours of driving with a parent and meet the age requirement and pass the test before you could get your license. I know once my daughter is old enough for this a class will be taken, my parents had lots of rules when it came to driving, it is a serious and can be dangerous thing to yourself and others, don't be afraid to lay down the law on this one.
