BEST foods while Breastfeeding!

Mamas!

I plan on giving it my all nursing.. I would love to know key foods to get while doing so.. I realize being healthy now and then is SO important.. I just didn't know if anything you felt is SUPER important! I also know eating often and regularly is important too! Plus loads of h2o, which I am certain I have that covered.. but any foods? Help a Mama to be out!

oats are great for milk supply so oatmeal is a good choice. Use the real stuff though, not instant to get the full benefit. Healthy fats like olive oil and avocados are a must. Low fat dairy and eggs are good for dha. If your worried about milk supply keep some flaxseed and fenugreek around the house to add to your foods.

The best advice is to eat healthy like you are now. What you eat can effect your supply, but not as much as nursing frequency does. As inconvenient as pumping is I really needed my pump in those early days. Once my girl was 4 weeks we introduces the bottle. I pumped once a day and my husband have her a bottle. I learned how much she ate and what normal production for me was. If I seemed low one day I could pump right after nursing a few times to increase my supply. It gave me piece of mind and gave me a break from nursing every once and a while. I still pump a few times a week to keep a bottle in the fridge invade my supply drops or if I'm gone. It's a lifesaver!

Oh Taylor, I love ALL of this!!

Thanks so much for those food tips.. I will completely note them and stock up! :)

And I LOVED your pumping tip and story.. a lot of my girlfriends make me think pumping is impossible while I BF too.. but I really want to try to get a system going, so, like you.. my husband can feed from time to time and I can have a supply on hand.. your story has given me hope!

Oh gosh, you are so sweet.. I needed that and will most likely need your support (hope I don't bother you tooooo much!!) But I hear it's super hard at first, but if I can make it through, it's SO worth it. I've heard great things about the Medela cream.. so I will stock up on that! Can you explain the shields more? I have heard of them, but unsure their purpose or why gals use them... I love oatmeal cookies, so I can do that too! hehe

I used a shield with my daughter because when my milk came in my boobs got so big an hard she couldn't get her little mouth on to the nipple properly. The nipple is supposed to stretch deep into the roof of their mouth and it was so hard it wouldn't. I also had over active let down so when she did latch I practically water boarded to poor girl with spraying milk! She got frustrated and I got sore. Te shield is a soft thin plastic with a nipple shape with holes in the tip.. You place it over your nipple a nd the baby sucks on that. It gave her something to hold onto and still created suction that stretched my nipple out. It also controled the spray.

We weaned of the shield in about a month and now she nurses great! I'm glad I had it. I don't really know why they are considered bad.
