Set up a "password" for your kids safety for anyone that picks up your kids...

My kids and I have a password... A word or phrase that just us 3 know.. and I told them if ANYONE other than me picks them up... even if it's a good friend... and I haven't told them that morning... then that friend MUST know the password... no matter how close they are, ... They MUST ask them for it before they can go...

Last week... I was stuck in traffic and asked a good friend to grab my kids for me and take them home with her for a bit.. I told her the password and she seemed to almost be offended.. since she's considered family.. but I told her that it's got to be everyone, not just a select few... If I haven't told them ahead of time, then they know to ask... I didn't get a chance to remind them.. and so I was interested to see if they would remember.. and they DID.. .or my son did, my daughter didn't...

I hate to make them think that people we trust may not be people we trust, but I said that its just safety across the board...

My son said casually, "did my mom tell you a password?" and my friend told him the password...

THAT way they KNOW for sure that I've been in contact with them .. otherwise there is NO WAY they would know the password... so, if someone says they're there to get them and doesn't know the password then they don't go... period... and any good friend would honor that and be respectful of it, even if I forgot to tell them... plus, they can always call me...

Any other moms out there with a secret password? Or something else like it?

YEAH! It's easy and great and they don't ask too many questions about why... PLUS they get to choose the word... (purple bunny balls).. and make it funny and their own...

So, they know when my friend told them at pick up that she was taking them home, that when she said "purple bunny balls"... they KNEW I was aware and they felt better... even though she's a great trusted friend...

Just don't forget your password.. and if you change it.. remember it and remind them too.. lol

We live in Los Angeles, CA. I'm a writer, comedian, actor and single mom of two. Parenting is hard. I try to keep a sense of humor about it all and find the find the funny... in what is most likely NOT funny (i.e. boogers, meltdowns, homework, etc.).
